Riding & safety
A practical pre-ride safety checklist
Check your equipment, route and riding conditions before setting out, with different checks for different ride types.
Applies to: General preparation. Stand-on advice is identified separately from mobility and specialty equipment.
First, check the equipment
- Look for damage, loose components, tire problems or fluid leaks.
- Secure folding mechanisms, removable seats and other adjustable parts as instructed.
- Check lights, signals or horn where fitted.
- Confirm normal steering and braking using the manufacturer’s recommended check in a clear area.
- Investigate warning lights, error messages or changes in handling before riding.
Segway’s F-series safety document discusses steering, connections and braking. It is an example for that scooter family, not a substitute for another model’s instructions.
For stand-on scooter riders
Use a properly fitted helmet and appropriate protective equipment. Keep both hands on the handlebars, avoid carrying bags on them, and do not carry a passenger on a single-rider scooter. Follow local rules about where the vehicle may be ridden. CPSC provides micromobility riding guidance.
Choose a speed that leaves time and space to react. Take extra care near driveways, crossings, pedestrians and changes in surface. Leave distractions for after the ride.
For mobility and specialty equipment
Check the seat, controls and any freewheel or drive setting according to the manual. Confirm that the route’s slopes, surfaces and obstacles are within the model’s stated limits. Three or four wheels—and even tracks—do not make every route suitable.
For unicycles, tracked chairs or unfamiliar control systems, obtain equipment-specific instruction. A checklist cannot establish personal suitability or replace a fitting or practical training session.
Then check the route
Consider weather, visibility, surface condition, the return journey and a way to get help if the equipment stops. Reconsider the trip if the route requires obstacles or conditions outside your device’s instructions. Do not treat a water-resistance rating as permission to ride through standing water.
Finish with a safe charging routine
Use an approved charger and follow the device’s charging instructions. CPSC advises being present while micromobility products charge, avoiding charging while asleep, and unplugging when charging is complete. Do not use damaged or modified battery packs. Read CPSC’s charging safety advice.
