Why advertised range differs from your actual range
Read range claims in context and plan trips around your route, load and exact battery configuration.
Applies to: Scooters, mobility equipment and e-bikes; pedaling and assistance settings apply only to e-bikes.
Start with the test conditions
An “up to” range describes a result under particular conditions. Before comparing two models, look for the test speed, rider weight, terrain, battery configuration and operating mode. A maximum-range figure without those details leaves important questions unanswered.
Pride’s Baja Bandit specifications show how the same 20 Ah configuration has different published range estimates at different rider weights: up to 14.5 miles at 220 lb and 11.25 miles at 400 lb. Those figures describe that model and those stated conditions—not a correction formula for other scooters.
What changes the energy needed for a journey?
- Load and terrain: rider weight, luggage and climbs change the work the vehicle must do.
- Riding pattern: faster travel and repeated acceleration can increase energy demand.
- Temperature and battery condition: cold conditions and battery aging can reduce available performance.
- Tires and setup: use the specified tire pressure where applicable and keep the vehicle maintained.
- E-bike assistance: pedaling, gearing and assistance level influence battery consumption in ways that do not apply to throttle-only scooters.
Bosch discusses load, temperature and gearing in its e-bike range guidance. Pride also identifies terrain, battery and tire conditions as variables in its model specifications.
Plan the whole trip, including the return
Write down the full distance, likely detours and any climb on the way home. Do not plan a necessary journey to use the final advertised mile. There is no single reserve percentage that guarantees success for every vehicle and route.
Get to know a new ride on shorter familiar routes with a practical way to return. Note distance, conditions and the battery display before and after each outing. Do not deliberately run the battery flat to establish a maximum.
Compare like with like
Check that a review or specification refers to the same battery size and model version you intend to buy. Distinguish manufacturer estimates from independently measured results, and read the conditions attached to each.
A larger battery can add both capacity and weight. For someone who must lift a scooter into a car, a smaller model with a workable transport plan may be a better fit than the largest range number.
