Vehicle lifts, carriers and ramps: plan the whole loading system
Choose a loading method by matching the exact ride, vehicle, operator and route before ordering equipment.
Applies to: Transporting an unoccupied scooter, power chair or other mobility device. Occupied passenger access requires a qualified accessible-vehicle assessment.
Start with the loading method
There is no universal transport solution. A powered hitch lift carries compatible equipment outside the vehicle. An inside hoist raises the device into the cargo area. A manual carrier with a ramp requires pushing, guiding and securement. A portable ramp bridges a measured rise and may serve a doorway, step or approved vehicle-loading application.
Define the job before comparing products: home access, occasional trunk loading, exterior vehicle transport and occupied passenger access are different problems.
Match the device, vehicle and operator
| Part of the system | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Mobility device | Exact model, transport weight with battery and accessories, dimensions, wheelbase and approved lifting or securement points. |
| Vehicle | Year, make, model and trim; hitch class and ratings; remaining payload; bumper, hatch, camera and exhaust clearances. |
| Operator | Ability to reach controls, place a ramp, guide the device, attach securement and repeat the sequence safely. |
The installed lift or carrier, adapters and the mobility device all count toward vehicle and hitch loads. A receiver that physically fits does not prove that the complete system is permitted. Harmar’s vehicle-lift guide explains why compatibility depends on the full combination.
For ramps, measure the rise before choosing a length
A shorter ramp is easier to store but creates a steeper slope. Measure the actual vertical rise and available landing space, then use the ramp maker’s sizing method and the mobility device manual. EZ-ACCESS advises checking the device owner’s guide for acceptable slope and ramp use. Read its incline guide.
- Confirm usable width, edge protection and a stable connection at both ends.
- Use the capacity that applies to the actual wheel arrangement; one- and two-axle limits can differ.
- Check the weight of the selected length and who will place it.
- Keep the route, landing and ramp surface clear and dry.
Separate equipment transport from occupied access
A scooter carrier normally transports the device without its rider. If a person needs to remain seated in a wheelchair while entering or traveling in a vehicle, seek a qualified accessible-vehicle provider for the lift, seating position and passenger securement system. A cargo platform or portable loading ramp does not establish safe passenger access or crash protection.
Ask for a complete demonstration and quote
The quote should include the lift or ramp, vehicle adapters or hitch work, wiring, securement, installation, training and service. Ask the provider to demonstrate the entire sequence with the actual device and vehicle. Confirm the fit and load calculation in writing.
